Spencer F. Eccles


Spencer Fox Eccles was chairman and chief executive officer of First Security Corporation. Until its merger with Wells Fargo and Co. in October 2000, First Security Corp was the oldest multi-state bank holding company in the nation.

Born in Ogden in 1934, Spencer graduated with a degree in banking and finance from the University of Utah in 1956 and received his master’s in the same from Columbia in 1959. Eccles immediately began his career in 1959 with the First National city Bank in New York City. In late 1960 he joined his uncles, George S. and Marriner S. Eccles, at First Security Bank. In 1973, Eccles was named executive vie president of First Security Corporation. In 1975, he was named president and in 1982 was elected chairman of the board and chief executive officer. From 1982 until the merger with Well Fargo in 2000, First Security Corp. more than doubled in size.
Spencer is currently Chairman Emeritus, Intermountain Region of Wells Fargo and Company. He also serves on the Boards of the Union Pacific Corporation, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National Park Foundation Board, U.S. Ski Team Foundation, Intermountain Health Care and Primary Children's Medical Center Foundation and was a major supporter of the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing Committee. He is President of the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation, which provides funds for education, health, and preservation projects throughout the state of Utah. His awards and honors include the University of Utah Distinguished Alumnus Award, the National Conference of Christians and Jews Brotherhood Award, Utah National Guard Minuteman Award and the Salt Lake City Giant in Our City Award.
