Laureates' BiographiesN. Eldon Tanner ![]() N. Eldon Tanner was born in Salt Lake City in 1898. From 1952 to 1958, he was a leader in Canadian industry, first as president of Merrill Petroleum's, Ltd., and director of Toronto Dominion Bank of Canada, and later as president of the Trans Canada Pipe Line. He also served as president of the Canadian Gas Association. In 1962, Tanner brought his financial expertise to Salt Lake City, becoming a member of the Council of the Twelve for the LDS Church. He was first vice president and director of Deseret Management Corporation, chairman of the board of U & I Inc., chairman of the board of ZCMI, vice-chairman of Bonneville International Corp., and vice-president of Brigham Young University. He has also been honored for his efforts in helping to bring many important buildings to downtown Salt Lake City, including the 30-story LDS Church office building, the ZCMI Center, the Salt Palace, Symphony Hall, the Beneficial Life building, the Utah Power and Light building, Crossroads Plaza, and the Kennecott building. |
